I'm not sure, but it's something added on the 2N, because my OM-
2 manual makes no reference to it.

My *guess* would be that the following is happening:

In auto mode, the TTL/OTF flash sensor is telling the flash when to 
start, and then when to quench when it senses the correct 
exposure.

But in manual mode, the camera is simply shorting the X-sync 
terminal in the shoe, and doing nothing with the TTL terminal, 
causing the flash fire, then immediately quench, with effectively its 
minimum duration, probably around 1/40,000 sec.

I think T-series flashes will give a full dump (ie: never quenched) in 
this same situation, but I don't know about the Vivitar.
