Exactly right. The few weddings I've done have been done with this
proceedure. Or switch to manual. If you are 5 meters away and need f4 for
the exposure you want, change the GN of the flash by putting fingers over
it. 1 finger =1 stop, 2 fingers = 2 stops. A sheet of tissue is 1 stop.
