This was clearly a stylistic/cosmetic decision on Olympus' part.
See, for instance, the Pen FT and FTL Zuikos that preceeded the
OM system: they all had jet black rims.
OTOH, most of the N*kkors, R*kkors, and C*non FL lenses from the early
70's had silver rims. Konica's Hexanons and screw-mount Fujinons
had even more stylish, very thin, bevelled silver (chrome?) rims.
IMHO, there was/is no problem with reflections from the silver rim.
My guess is that this was a vicious rumor spread by the first lens
maker who introduced black rims, either as a marketing gimmick, or
because they had switched to plastic lens barrels.
Of course, anyone who feels compelled to get rid of his/her inferior
silver rim Zuikos at rock bottom prices, pls give me a holler :-)
