A stepping ring not only allows the use of a larger filter, but also
moves the filter slightly farther from the lens, partly offsetting the
increased size of the filter. The only way of knowing whether a
particular over-sized filter will work with a particular lens is,
unfortunately, to try it.

A friend of mine recently bought a lot of filters, and sent me a big wad
o' literature to peruse. I discovered that "step up" and "step down"
refer to the filter, not the lens.

In other words, an adapter that lets a 55mm filter be used on a 49mm
lens is a step-DOWN ring. And vice-versa.

This sorta makes sense. You're adapting the filter to fit the lens, not
the other way 'round.

I just received the 50/2 macro. (It's an 8-element lens! <gasp>) When I
bought it (from B&H), the salesman asked the equivalent of "Do you want
fries with that?" -- "Do you want a UV filter with that?" He said it was
a multi-coated Tiffen, for only $9. So I bit.

Not bad. Made in Hauppauge (HOW-pog) in the good ol' U S of A. (Tiffen
is around the corner from a friend I was visiting a few months back, but
we didn't have time to stop buy. The company store has specials and
close-outs. Maybe next time.) The multi-coating has a green reflection
almost identical to Zuiko MCs.

When I was doing my filter research, I asked a guy from Schneider about
multi-coating, and got the answer I expected: it's really of advantage
only when you're using more than one filter, or shooting into the light.

Remember the old joke about "punishment will continue until behavior
improves"? Well, I've noticed a recent spate of misspellings of a word
intimately connected with photography. So, here it goes again...

"Lens" is spelled with ONE 'e'.

Typos and slips of the finger are understandable, but is it too much to
ask that the people on this group spell "lens" correctly?

I'd better not say anything about trying to make your postings look
neat.
