Yeah, that's what I figured I'd do a lot of.  I've got a pretty sturdy
monopod.  Used it a bit with the 250/2.  Also, the lens, mounted on a
body with the 1.4 attached, actually fits quite nicely in my photo
backpack, along with a bunch of support gear.  Yeah, it's pretty heavy.
Wouldn't want to carry it too far, but it does work.  Can't seem to
convince my wife she should carry that while I carry the 4x5 backpack.
