[OM] Periodic Maintenance

I want to start a new discussion on preventive maintenance for
Olympus OM cameras. I hope that the discussions will eventually
lead to a collection of suggestions for one of the FAQ's, if
it does not exist already. And I think the list of things to
do should be model specific -- for example, for an OM-1, here
are the things to do...; for an OM-10, do these things once a
month... and do these once a year... etc.

To start things off, we all know that the shutter should be
kept un-cocked when the camera is not going to be used, but
how often should the shutter be exercised, and at what speeds
(the OM-1* has a slow gear train and a fast gear train, so at
least one of each speed ought to be exercised once in a while).

If a particular speed film is predominantly used with one camera
body, we know that the ASA switch could get "stuck" at that
speed and the contacts for other speeds could have problems. So
how often should we exercise the ASA dial (i.e., rotate it around
all the speeds to clean the contacts).

Other topics of interest are: The OFF/On/Manual/Auto switch, the
self timer, focusing screen, hot shoe, shutter speed ring,
battery and battery compartment, motor drive coupling (models
such as the OM-PC/40 has no cover for the hole, so what is the
right thing to do), the rewind mechanism, the back/pressure plate,
the foam seals, the leatherette covering, and so on...

Anyone else want to contribute their insights on this topic?
