That'll work.  Getting 5v may be difficult (joystick port is one good choice).

Another way would be to hook an opto-coupler (peanuts at a radio slack
or similar) between a parallel port data pin and parallel port ground.
Hook the opto-isolated trigger pins to the winder trigger.  No
external voltage required.

Then output a 1 to that pin to fire the winder.

(If you don't have a winder, there are still Ways).
