Take an old skylight or UV and smear it with Vasoline. You can easily keep
the center sharp, or graduate the diffusion to the outer edges by varying
the Vasoline thickness, or do other creative things.

Don't have any Vasoline in the field and you suddenly need a soft filter?
Some hand cream or any other oily stuff works well.
<gross_out_warning>Don't have hand cream? Rub your finger along your nose,
then rub it on the filter. Ear wax will also work in a
pinch!</gross_out_warning>

When you're done, toss the filter in the little basket in your dishwasher.
It's a renewable resource!

I tend to only use filters for this that have outlived their usefulness as
a lens cap.
