Hi,

It looks like a microscope adapter to me...

Check the mirror you mentioned: it has to have some kind of beam splitting
capability or it can be "moved out of the way" somehow, usualy by means of
a leaver on one side of the device...

1. beam splitting capability: These adapters are usualy designed to split
10 - 250f the availlable light towards the device you described in "4",
(wich has to have some kind of "cross hairs" for focussing and an
eyepiece)... The "rest" of the light (90 - 75%) is used to make the actual
image... They are used for microphotography of living (moving...) objects.
For that purpose they are very good, at least when the microscope has a
good (bright!) light source. They are hardly usable at all when light
conditions are poor (fluorescence microscopy, darkfield etc...).

2. the mirror can be moved out of the way: the operator can choose: 100%
light for observation or 100 0ght for the picture...

I'm puzzled with "3": never heard of an iris there...It seems unusual: one
would expect the shutter about there (would be logic from an "optical
design" point of view...). These devices usualy have their own - more or
less "vibration-free" - schutter.

If it really is a microscope adapter (I'm not 100ure!...): It isn't that
strange that the device doesn't carry any markings as lots of them were
made illegally (copys more or less, from famous brands as Zeiss, Reichert,
Leitz etc...) by the East European industry...

Can send you some pictures (*.jpg or so) of this type of device for
comparisson if you want...

Yvan Lindekens.
