I think just about any focal length can be used for some kind of
portrait photography. Even fisheyes, to frame people in their
environment; just make sure the camera is perfectly vertical, and that
the person is in the middle of the frame where distortions are minimal.
My personal favourites however are very long lenses in the 300-500 mm
range, with shooting distances from 3-6 meters. They give beautifully
blurred backgrounds and can perfectly isolate people, even in crowded
places. And the 300/4.5 Zuiko and 500/8 mirror can still easily be
handheld.
