I share this experience. For the tubes with a thicker wall, especially
the ones with a glue coating inside (for strength and waterproof
shrinking) a hair dryer won't do. I use a stronger device, called a
paint stripper. Maybe this _is_ what Denton calls a heat gun?
Strangely enough mine is 1600 watt in power too... seems a bit hot for
one's hair though.
 
Anyway, it was very cheap, about $15 - which is about the same price
as one meter of high quality glue coated shrinking tube. It works
perfectly. I built many batteries with it (e.g. for the MD NiCad
packs) and I also used it to make many cable connections strong and
waterproof.
