Hi T.C.,
I had problems with this myself until I tried John Shaw's recommendation.
Ref; "Landscape Photography" pg. 31.  "Keep your eye to the viewfinder as you
SLOWLY stop down the aperture of the lens until you like the results."  He
goes on with a tip to use a 'dark cloth' like large format users use or just
pull a jacket over your head and viewfinder.  This will block out the ambient
light and help your eyes adjust to the lower light level.
