Ben,
        I also bought a used OM-F/30 as a second body. I was aware that the 
focus
assist did not work, (did not bother me at the time). What I found though
was that the body uses no less than five batteries behind the front panel.

I believe, (and I may be wrong) that two batteries are for the exposure
meter and the remaining three are focus assist. They seem to go flat at
different rates and even though the battery check indicated the batteries
were OK, replacing the batteries brought the focus assist to life.
