I haven't been into that one in 20 years, but it does seem to be the big
rivalry. I was always partial to Canon; they make some decent things, I
have a cheapish Canon digital camera and a Canon printer, and their
video stuff is pretty attractive. The EOS line is superb, but then again,
the Nikon stuff isn't bad either. My Dad swapped his Konica's for Nikons
a number of years ago, and never looked back (though I never thought all
that much about the Konicas, but he remains a fan of shutter speed
priority automation to this day).

Another thing about Canon -- not that it's important for many users, but
they seem to have the only line of compatible lenses that fit 35mm. APS,
digital, and video cameras.

It was the size of the Canon stuff, and the price (I got into it before
the days of the consumer SLR), that sold me on Olympus. I was replacing
my Konica rangefinder, and not only did I want to use the same camera
bag, but I was going to be carrying this everywhere, on foot, bicycle,
etc. for years. If I needed the exercise factor, I could always throw in
some extra weights.

Indeed. I wasn't entirely happy leaving Olympus for Canon on the digital
camera, but on the cheap side, that was the right decision at the time.
Of course, it changes every 2-4 months, these things being more inspired
by the crazy rate of growth in the computer industry than anything
photographic, and Oly is certainly the choice for fancy but not nutso
mid-range digital stuff (the various digital ZLRs). Though what I really
want is a digital OM body, not that I'm somewhat convinced about digital
(maybe it was the $125 I spend on film on processing the last two weeks)

I just moved this past summer, I understand completely.
