My guess: you took the 12,000 foot shots at the beginning and end of the
day, and the 14,000 foot ones in the middle of the day. When you adjusted
the polarizer for mid-day, the sun was directly above you, thus at
right-angles to the polarization introduced by the half-silvered mirror,
throwing spot meter readings off by much more than those taken when the two
polarizers were closer in alignment.

Just a guess... I always peak the meter reading with the polarizer before
spot-metering.
