Jay;

OM content: none except I've used all 3 of the vehicles described below
to carry my OMs to photo locations.

I don't want to start another car thread, but felt compelled to add my 2
cents, although they're not about the Explorer. I don't know anyone
who's owned one. But my experiences with my 1986 Jeep Cherokee are
completely opposite of yours. I bought it new (I'm presuming you bought
the explorer used, that MAY have been part of the problem. You never
know what the previous owner did to the thing.) and took pretty good
care of it. Although I did a LOT of tough off-road photo travel with
it. My experiences were quite good. In 11 years my total maintenance
costs were less than yours were in a couple of weeks. I sold it a bit
over a year ago to a coworker. It had 154000 miles on it then. She
loves it and it's got 165000 on it now. The tranny was still original.
In fact, the clutch had gone about 125000 before it needed replacement.
The only reason I didn't get another one is my situation has changed and
I needed a bigger vehicle, so I got a Tahoe (which looks to be, at 19000
mile mark, another winner.)

Having said that, my other vehicle is a Lincoln Mark VIII, (FORD!!)
which I bought used (I can't afford a new one of those.) This car is
the best car I've ever owned - by far. And the only other car I've
driven that equals it in performance is the Lexus SC400. The Mark is no
land yacht - it handles crisply. BUT, as I said, I bought this Ford
product used - at 46000 miles. It had been an executive car in
Dearborn. And apparently the executive did not trouble him/herself with
maintenance. I got the car at a good price and bought an extended
warranty. Then I set about having the dealership whip the thing into
like new condition - under warranty. Car has 90000 miles on it now and
runs like new. BUT - your suspicions confirmed - I have had to have the
... tranny replaced. Nothing broke or chewed up, just wasn't shifting
smoothly. I will admit that the ONLY thing I've been disappointed in
with the Mark is the tranny.
