absolutely arbitrary...you're right. and while i may realize that the
millenium doesn't end until 12/31/2000, there's something very satisfying
about the point where the odometer "rolls over" and all those zeros
appear.

tell me about it: i know where i'll be at sunrise on 1/1/2000: here at
work, surrounded by humming computers and waiting for one to explode.
my boss has already decreed that whatever vacations i may take this
year, they will be over by 12/30!
i'm not worried about Y2K. but Y10K, that's when i'm pretty sure all
our software will break. i'm betting i won't be able to take vacation
on 1/1/10000 either!
