While *duplicating* the cicruit is probably prohibitively expensive,
duplicating a subset of the functionality may be practical. It seems to me
that the automatic shutter control may be as simple as a couple op-amps and
single-shots, and the skills needed to make flex circuits and put
surface-mount chips on them. It's basically just an integrator feeding a
single-shot multivibrator: fire the first curtain, measure light until a
threshold is reached, fire the second curtain.

Driving the LCD and any other whiz-bang bells and whistles is another
matter entirely!

If you're worried, invest in a cheap, beater "parts camera" to cannibalize
as needed. If John runs out of parts, send him both the beater and the one
to be fixed, and say "make one good camera out of these!" I've been
maintaining some old electronic gear for decades with this technique, which
is well-known to antique car buffs as well.
