Dear Oly Shooters,

I'm back from vacation with the in-laws in Hawaii. After traveling with a
6- and 3-year-old, I need a vacation from the vacation. I did most of my
shooting around dawn or at sunset. Cameras (3 x OM-1's and OM-2S) worked
flawlessly.

I just got resubscribed today, so I'm having to reconstruct the recent
deconstruction of the OM-4 from snips and responses.

I thought a lot about the OM-4, though indirectly, since I was wondering if
it is really so much better than the OM-2S that it would be worth
purchasing one over the course of the next year. I really fell in love
with my OM-2S this trip. The spot meter is simple and straightforward. I
found myself needing it while shooting so much in dawn's early light. I had
any number of instances in which I needed a reading -- any reading -- at 1
sec with the lens wide open to figure exposure. Next time I'll take my
handheld spot meter, but it certainly is convenient to have one in the camera.

I found an interesting camera shop on Young St. in Honolulu called Super
Save Camera and picked up an Olympus 2x teleconverter for $90 and a 50/3.5
macro for $140. I haven't seen any of the images made with these yet. I'll
report back when I do.

The 2X converter was handy as was the Vivitar 2X macro converter I took
with me. I used the Vivitar 2X macro with my 50/1.8 for some macro work,
though on the whole I did very little macro work. At least one additional
shot was made with 200/4 and extension tubes. I guess I'm glad I took the
tubes, though they didn't really earn their keep otherwise.

Even after I got the Olympus 2X converter I used the Viv 2X with my 85/2 on
a couple of occasions when I wanted a tele just under 200mm and with the
135/3.5 when I wanted a tele a little longer than 200. The Viv 2X has good
sharpness but I expect the Olympus 2X to preserve contrast better.

All in all, I was glad I had all the following lenses:

28/f2.8
50/1.8
85/2
135/3.5
200/4
Sigma 21-35 zoom

Dawn and sunset shots were more focused on clouds than the sun per se. The
50/1.8 and Sigma 21-35 got a workout. For shots where the sun was a more
important component of the image I used 85, 135, and 200 much more
frequently -- the 85 coupled with the Vivitar 2X converter occasionally, as
I mentioned.

Will share more in days to come. Back to reality (work, and this lovely
weather we're having).

Cheers,

Joel
