The reason that you have analogue dials on glass screens is that the simple
digital (numbers) display give the pilot no idea of trend, especially when
things are happening quickly e.g. you're going down fast.  I used to fly
the Jaguar which had a purely digital Head Up Display and the speed and
altitude were difficult to interpret in highly dynamic conditions - you had
to look down at the analogue instruments in time of stress or confusion.
Altimeters and Airspeed indicators now use analogue dials with digital
inserts to provide accuracy of reading without losing the important trend
information.  You might say that the OM4 display is a clever mixture as
well.
