Or, as I have discovered:
In auto mode, the camera will set an intermediate shutter speed to match the 
exact averaged multispot reading, as opposed to manual, where one must  fiddle 
with the aperture to get intermediate EVs. It depends whether you are using 
multi spot to get a "feel" for the scene, or to actually calculate a precise 
exposure based on your readings due to very narrow film latitude, etc. Manual 
or auto, respectively.
