I know exactly how you feel.  I lived in Perth for many years and only recently 
left 
(late '97).  My advice would be to do what I did and give up on the local stuff 
and 
buy on the Internet - most likely from overseas.  It does take a little faith 
in 
humanity, some discernment and quite a bit of courage but the rewards can make 
it 
well worth the effort.  It can also be great fun.

I acquired stuff from the Netherlands, various locales in the USA from Texas to 
Alaska and even acquired one item from Sydney.  In fact since I embarked on the 
slippery slide to Zuikoholism I have not bought anything by walking into a shop.

I think Gary hit the nail on the head with his recent analysis of the 
fundamental 
change in the nature of the secondhand market for camera equipment.  A few 
significant items in that exodus of equipment from the USA came my way 8-)
