Hmmmm...scanners.  As Denton mentions, the Minolta unit is excellent.  HP
offers a unit at 2400 dpi resolution for around $350, depending on the
dealer.  It does a fine job.

As for the difference of scanning film compared to scanning prints on a flat
bed - there really is no comparison.  The best flat bed resolution I know of
is 1200 dpi, most are in the 600 range.  Film scanners are much higher.  My
own observation is that reflected (flat bed) scans are also lower in
contrast.  It may be just my unit.  Unless you have a need to scan large
items (A4 size pages), I'd stick to a film type unit.
