David Brown once posted the text of an article in 35mm Photographer which 
included 
the following -

system with lens head, and you can double that again.  The popular 300mm
f4.5 - not apochromatic, just a very good telephoto - fetches its focal length 
in 
pounds on a good day.

I have both the 300 and the 1.4TC.  I think they are both very good.  Using the 
1.4TC seems to have no penalty, in terms of image quality, as far as I can tell.
