This is normal due to the light sensor which is located in the viewfinder.
Investing in Nikon doesn't help you here, because even the F5 has this
problem. As I have read in a book written by the F5 user Fritz Poelking,
the F5 has a switchable red cover for the eyepiece for photos taken from a
tripod without the eye of the photographer looking through the eyepiece.
