Do you have an opinion on the merits of follow-focus v. autofocus
for wildlife photography (e.g. birds)?

I would say this is not an open-and-shut case in favour of AF, because
of the noisiness of current AF cameras. I can tell you for sure
kangaroos can hear an OM-2N shutter at 50 meters because their ears
prick. Some also know lens changing - which they mistake for reloading
a gun in those places where they have been shot. Birds, OTOH, seem
completely unconcerned, at least in those areas where they are not hunted.
Other animals, such as echidnas, don't mind machine-like noises but
panic at footsteps.

Also, the AF might not be fast enough or might have a delay.
