The camera is exposing for the background and forground. Select some under
exposure on the compensation dial.

Underexpose a stop or so. If unsure, bracket (I can't believe I just said
that!).
If shooting outdoors with fill in flash, go to manual or normal auto to
underexpose your fill flash. This is in the archives somewhere. If at 1/60
the exposure is f8 (metered for the highlights, not the shadows), set the
flash on normal auto to f5.6 or f4 for 1 to 2 stops under exposure. 2 stops
in the go for me.
