Hi all:
Well, John P asked, so here is a first cut at some proposed "rules" for
the list. BUT, I *do not* think we should call them "rules". I think
they should be called policies and be worded nicely, not in an
imtimidating fashion (and if any of you are members of any of Dave
Sill's sysadmin lists, you know what intimidating means ;)

        * Please read the FAQ's:
before asking any questions to the list. The FAQs cover many
common topics, and a whole lot of very obscure, arcane ones,
so there is a good chance your question will be covered in
one of the FAQs. If there isn't an answer in the FAQ, or if
the answer in the FAQ needs clarification, or if you just feel
like asking your question anyway, please feel free to do so!

        * Please set your mail program so that it sends your messages
as text-only, not as HTML or with an attached HTML version.
These HTML versions are generally useless to many who read
the list, and will be ignored by many of the very people you
wish to reach to answer your questions. They also needlessly
inflate the size of the archives, the digest version of the list,
and make searching the archives more cumbersome.
[list here ways to turn this stuff off in popular mail clients]

        * Please realize that we like to think of ourselves as one of the
more friendly and family-like lists on the net. Flaming is
discouraged heavily, especially on-list flaming. Before you
post a harsh message in reply to something someone has said on
the list, please read it first and ask yourself "would I say these
things to this person's face?" and "how is this likely to make
me look to the rest of the list: like someone who is thoughtful,
or like someone who is mean, condescending, and/or abrasive?"
If the answer to either of these questions is negative, then you
might want to reconsider your reply.

        * Since this is a list hosted by a private concern, commercial
posts and spam of any kind are forbidden. Creative ways around
this prohibition (like a dealer posting "we have those for $X.XX"
in reply to every message on the list that mentions a piece of
OM gear) are also strongly discouraged. HOWEVER, if you are a
private individual and wish to sell some of your OM equipment,
we welcome your posts. We like to buy from within the "family"
if at all possible :). Also, alerting members to "deals" on
rare OM items that you yourself are not interested in buying
is considered a nice gesture. This list of "rare" items includes
(but is certainly not limitied to) macro equipment, fish eye lenses,
and very long (>= 400mm) and/or fast telephoto lenses. Please don't
let us know about every 50mm/1.8 that you see for $25, though :)

        * Most of all, enjoy the list! We welcome and support everyone's
contributions, and welcome you wholeheartedly to the Olympus
        Mailing List family.

Now that I've sent out this "first cut", I think we should come to some
general consensus as to what the list policies should really be. Let's
discuss these, and correct, add to, or delete as we see fit to come up
with a document we agree on. Also, let me say that no matter what we
come up with, I think they should remain suggestions only. I don't want
to see the situation develop where *anyone* is *ever* shouted down for
"disobeying a list policy" (except in the case of a commercial vendor
breaking the no commercialism policy, and they should be dealt with in
private, not on the list). It is simply not worth sacrificing the
sense of community we have developed.

Cheers,
--Lee
