Do you refer to any _internal_ serial number on the body itself, John?
The bottom plates of the 2 and 2N are easily exchanged, and sometimes
they have been replaced by new spares which also carry serial numbers.
So these numbers don't always tell everything about the camera body
age and history.

I once got a lens which read MC on the frontal ring. The only thing MC
was the frontal ring itself, obviously being a replacement coming
from a real MC lens... mine was single coated.
