This might be a dim comment on this subject, but if rubber is the problem
(aging splitting, or cut), why not use proper rubber vulcanising cements?. It
what tyre (or tire) depots use !!!!!.

Another possibility.

Some years ago, a specialist repair shop I know bought several reels of
product suitable for the grip rings, etc on lenses. This could be cut down and
seamlessly welted onto the object to be recovered. (The main repairs were to
commercial stuff lenses on bbc film cameras, and Panaflex cameras used in film
trade).

None of the normal suppliers would/could supply this material. He (after some
research), got through to the purchasing officer at Zeiss's factory, and found
out their supplier to the factory. Devious but it worked.

Incidently, as I remember it it isn't rubber but neoprene based material.

I have a really strange feeling that the manufacturers of the rubber/neoprene
turned out to be someone like London Rubber products (as was). Yes the
condom/houshold glove come surgical goods manufacturer.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Small
world isn't it?.
