[OM] Rubber Ring Experiment

Hallo list members,

In my collection of Zuikos, there is till now no rotten rubber ring. When I
buy a used lens, I mostly remove the ring and all residue of glue from the
ring and the lens and wash the ring with water, detergens and a tooth brush
to remove fat. Then a reattach the ring without any glue or cement. Except
for on lens, where a little bit liquid fat runs out from time to time, the
rings hold strong enough. With my Zuiko 50mm 1:3,5, when I tried to remove
the ring, I had to recognize, that it was fixed with super glue at one
little site. At this site, the ring was damaged (inelastic) after removing.
I tried to remove the residue of the super glue in a bath of acetone. It
did't work (the ring endured the treatment though), but something funny
happened: after the bath, the ring had a 10 - 15 percent greater diameter
than before. It took one day, till the old diameter was reached finally.
But the inelastic site was still there, so I ordered a replace ring which
costs less than 15 DM. BTW, I am not sure, if the rings are made out of
rubber or something synthetic or if they are always out of the same
material (there seems to be matte and glossy ones). They endure treatment
with white gas (not to be confused with benzene). Rubber is said to be a
very durable elastic material, better than elastic plastics.
