:I've noticed over the past few months many threads relating to big third
:party zooms.
:don't you zoomers find that the sheer mass, nevermind the arguable optical
:shortcomings, of these 35~105s and their ilk more than offsets any
:convenience?
:seems to me these chunks of wonder-glass fly in the face of the compact
:lightweight elegance that defines Olympus...
:I currently own both t*mr*n and t*kin*s (nicely shelved) so am not being
:too smug or sanctimonious.
:Am I missing something?

Well you certainly could be missing something if you stick to fixed focal
length lenses only. I remember an occasion where street artists did a
spectacular show with fire. I was only carrying fixed focal lenses and for
one shot I decided I needed 'the wide angle'. Well, as you can guess, by the
time I had it mounted the show was over... Ever since, my standard 'fast
action reporting' lens has been a zoom, currently a Vivitar Series I 28-90.
For this kind of work, I find the ability to quickly switch from moderate
tele to 28mm wide angle essential.
I use both fix focals and zooms, but for fast action photography I always
prefer fast (2.8) zooms. I don't consider, btw, a 35-105 (only 3x) a 'big'
zoom. But a 28-135, 28-200, 50-250, 60-300, 120-600...
Of course fixed focal lenghs have their own advantages which makes them more
appropiate on many occasions. So this eternal question you see in every book
that discusses equipment: 'fixed focal length or zoom?' doesn't make any
sense. Just combine them and make your choice depending on the situation.
