You're probably right; the tests I read were possibly based on a generic
Tamron 1.4x converter, combined with non-Tamron lenses; the 140F may very
well be better since it is matched for the 300/2.8 and 400/4.

Yes; the 1.4x converter is marked "Tamron BBAR MC / Teleconverter 140F" and
the 2x
converter is marked "Tamron SP BBar MC / Teleconverter 2x". They're both for
the Adaptall System, but no matter what you try, they don't fit together.
Maybe there is some special adapter that fits in between them?
