You could be right that the PCU is dead. A couple of years back, I've placed 
wrong polarity in my OM-PC. The results is a totally a dead body so from then I 
learnt my expensive lesson and very cautious whenever I place any battery in my 
camera.

Thanks to all for your suggestions but so far none of them have worked.
     
a)  Setting the shutter to B, I flicked the auto switch back and forth a 
number of times - still no meter readout nor does the shutter work;
     
b)  I exchanged the black battery cover with a chrome one - ditto;
     
c)  The OM-4 doesn't seem to have a switch position between Auto and battery 
check indicated in any way, although I guess that moving the switch from 
auto to battery a la Sean's advice is based upon the presumed  existence of 
such a spot. In any case, the camera remains dead.
     
Perhaps the CPU is dead?
