You have less depth of field wide open, which makes for more accurate 
focussing. And you lose speed as you focus closer, so it's good to 
start fast. The best length for field work is 90-105mm, and such a 
lens will also be a good for portraits provided it is fast.

I have made good close-up shots of natural subjects up to 1/2 life size
with tubes behind a Tokina 70-210 zoom. This combination isn't well
corrected for flatness of field but you can get away with it for
most such subjects.

I have the Tamron SP 500mm f/8, which has been producing excellent
bird shots and landscapes. Maybe mine is atypical - there seem to
be a lot of these around second hand.
