Being lazy myself, I tend to look for "bought" solutions.  I've found that, in 
various lighting situations, either so-called "fog" filters or Tiffen's 
"SoftNet" series does the trick.  The "SoftNets" come in both white and black 
versions, the latter being designed to control the effect of flare.  You can 
also get them in varying degrees of softening power.  By the way, these are 
uncoated filters.
