I purchased my first set of "close-up filters" over 20 years ago. They
have been used almost exclusively for a technique which is now
essentially obsolete - shooting directly off a CRT screen. In those
days (as we travel back to yesteryear...) it was relatively expensive to
print digital images, and it was my business to produce digital images.
I needed slides for presentations, but could not justify the expensive
solutions.

(an aside...that was also when I purchased my first Speed Graphic - the
best tool for producing Polaroid prints of digital images)

Anyway...my favorite setup involved my trusty 70-150 zoom and a +2 (I
think - rarely a +4) close-up lens. The zoom gave me the ability to
fine tune the composition without moving the tripod around, and the
close-up lens let me fill the frame with a 19" CRT.

Quality was not much of an issue, because I always shot stopped down to
get 1/2 second exposures (I usually bracketted using the aperture over a
3 stop range). The CRT screen was flat enough, and the resolution of
the CRT image was very coarse (512x512, or 642x480).

Now, of course, if I want a high-quality digital image in hard copy, I
simply e-mail it to my printing service and it's ready by end of
business. If low-quality is good enough and I want a paper print rather
than a transparency, I print it myself.

Time marches on.

Anyone need an "almost mint" set of close-up lenses (+1, +2, +4)?

How much will they get on ebay? As a set, or separately? Case extra?
