Hi!

My humble opinions about digital cameras around $1000...

I got a DC-260 from Kodak (around $900), with a resolution of more
than 1500x1000. I do not like it.
Some features:
- It is slow
- It eats batteries.
- no real manual mode, bad long time exposure mode
- flaky software (on of them does not "boot" anymore).
- It can take very reasonable outdoor shots of well lighted scenes,
  just like a point&shoot.

Before you buy one, to avoid disapointment, make sure that:
- you check how long it takes, say, to take 10 hi-res pictures in a row.
- the thing does not kill batteries (anyway, I think you should not
use alcaline cells but rather high current cells like Nicad or lithium).
- you do not expect more than point&shoot behavior
- you can download your pictures with something else than serial line
(which are too slow). The Kodak comes with flash-memory cards that
you can sink into a pcmcia slot of a laptop. Instant transfer!!! Very nice!

To compare images from all the cameras, a great web site is:

Maybe you should...
If you are not in a hurry, a good slide scanner should
be considered instead...
