An acquaintance of mine does a lot of polar work (expeditions, etc) and has
made sure that his equipment selection conforms to the rigors of extreme
cold by having all grease removed and where necessary replaced with teflon.
His camera equipment that is used outdoors is NEVER used indoors in the
presence of cooking or showering--he has a second kit for that. I've asked
him about the IF lenses as to whether they were better or not for polar
work and his answer was yes, because the lens doesn't suck air in and out
when focusing and that the focusing mechanisms of the IF lenses are light
enough that they don't require much of any lubricant.

A side note on all this... He said that for extreme polar conditions you
want the loosest, most worn out equipment that has a lot of slop to it. In
the autofocus world, the sloppy focusing of the Canon EOS lens are ideal.
Just remember, that a single bit of moisture freezes and becomes
effectively a grain of sand. Ouch!
