Henry,
I had exactly the same problem with my 2S. It's been awhile but as I
recall I performed what could be described as an "intuitive disassembly"
of the outer plate, along with a sparing application of grease. Haven't
had any problems since.
The problem was especially maddening because if left alone it would
become---temporarily---unstuck. Still, of all the problems with this
camera, this is the only one I've been able to fix myself.
