BBB,

(Gulp! ...I'm on the spot)

Good question!

The quick answer is that there are two reasons - the lens delivers a sharper
image when stopped down and it also allows for some imprecise framing by
delivering more fg-to-bg DOF.

Long answer:

(1) consider that since I've got a 24mm (by design having LOTS of DOF
potential) up in the air on a stick and

(2) I usually lean it forward, ummm 10-20 degrees, so a goodly portion of my
image consists of immediate to near _forground_ rather than horizon. Since
I'm 6'-ish and the monopod adds another 4-5' then this is roughly 10' from
the lens to where ever, and

(3) I add to this combination ISO100 slide film with a 1-stop push. This
gives me f/8-11 @500 and tack sharp images from fg-to-bg even though I'm
waving this pole-contraption around in the air.

Hey, my reasoning may be all wrong but guess what? It works.
