That can work to your advantage.

A technique my father developed when photographing cannon: (the big
smoky bangy things, not the oft-missplet plastic clicky things) 

   Know the "halfway" point of your shutter release.  Choose way fast
   shutter speed.  Focus and half-press the shutter release.  
   Even with earmuffs the muzzle report will cause you to flinch, 
   firing the camera at exactly the right time to capture the smoke
   (and even the muzzle flash if you're lucky).
