Of course this can be done; with a 300mm you can completely isolate a
person's face from the background. But not every model will feel comfortable
when a super tele bazooka is pointed from a distance of 5m at her or him.

The tripod thread doesn't look that weak to me; besides, the converter only
adds 260g.
