Neil,
unfortunately there is no polarity "standad" for ohmmeter test leads
but very frequently for DVM's they do seem to have the positive tied to the
positive test lead. (I seem to remember old analog multimeters are often the
other way round) If the meter red lead is positive when testing Ohms then
your assumption above is correct. If you want to do a very simple test before
soldering it in, so that you are guaranteed to get it right do the following:
get a resistor of about 1K Ohm (any value from 1 to 10k would also work).
hook it up to the silver oxide battery positive terminal . Connect the other
end to your terminal X . Connect terminal A to the battery negative. You can
just get somebody to hold the pieces in contact. Measure the voltage accross
the diode it shouild be about 220mV or so (if 1k is used, or 160mV or so if
10k used). If it is 1.55-1.6V then you need to swap terminals for your
installation (or you are not making good contact with the resistor!)
