I never want to depart from real world conditions in these tests, least they
become useless for people doing typical shooting. (My test subject is
controversial enough). FWIW, the 100 mm and shorter lenses are typically
shot on typical home carpeting with a weighted tripod. The 135mm and longer
lenses are shot on linoleum or concrete floors, with weighted tripods. The
exception to the latter is the 250mm f/2, where I didn't weight it down.
Obviously, weighting down a tripod didn't hurt that test any. Thus, I'm
inclined to rule out "substrate" as a source of significant variation in test
results. I suppose I could also rule out weighting vs. unweighting of an
already heavy tripod, but I don't have the guts to go that far yet.
