Gyro-stabilised camera platforms are indeed not a new idea but used more in
the motion picture industry for shooting from helicopters. You may have seen
the big (1.5m diameter) spherical 'Wescam' camera attached to a chopper -
that's what it is. A cheaper variant is the Schwem 'gyrozoom' 60-300mm lens
that has gyro motors stabilising the lens only. I used to shoot chopper stuff
with this lens and it takes some getting used to: the image moves
independently of the camera, so a pan shot starts about a second after the
camera starts moving, and stops bout a second after the camera does.
