One of the best tricks I've learned is to cut a strip out of a
plastic milk container. (the white opaque container) Cut it as "high" as the
height (thickness) of the flash tube, and 2 to 3 " wider (longer) than the
tube so you can wrap the plastic around the front of your flash and either
using velcro or double sided sticky foam tape, attach the ends of the plastic
to the left and right sides of the flash. The plastic will not fit tightly
against the flash tube, it will kind of arc around the front of the flash.
This is good for two reasons-
1.- The flash tube remains cooler, and 2. - some light from the flash will
spill out above and below the plastic, but all light going forward (direct)
will be softened. You'll lose _about_ 1 full stop of light, but this method
works very well and sure beats the $30 or $40 price of the commercial
versions (Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce being one of them).
