  There's a possible "best of both worlds" solution here. There's a 
thing called the "Lowe Pro Trim Trekker", which has BOTH backpack straps
and shoulder strap. I've never seen one, so I can't say much about it.
Interior measurements: 12.5x5.5x12.5, which should fit your 1-2 options.
