Sounds like an improvement.  No wonder they are upwards of $1000.

I at one time used a piece of gaffers tape but the glue was getting close to
entering the chamber so I stopped that.
My problem is a little different.
The little alignment pin will not recede (they are springy you know)
so the cap does not fit.
I now put the cap on upside down and tape it in position.
The thumb nail channel (?) gives enough clearance for the pin.
Maybe you could use another brand cover if you have one around.

BTW, I don't feel that the winder helps the handling for me.
Nice grip though.  But without batteries it is hard to get a good feel
on the shutter release.  With batteries is a little better.
Just heavier and bulkier for most occasions.
