It worked like a vinyet on your lens when the aperture closed down, the lens 
hood
which was nearer to the lens and not visible (out of focus) became visible with 
depth
of field, the greater the f-stop the more pronounced and sharp the hood would
become!!!
No lye!!!!!!!
